Paolo Veronese

... would normally have been known, according to the convention of the time, by the surname Spezapreda, after his father's occupation (stonecutter). In his early career he adopted the surname Caliari, because his mother was the illegitimate daughter of a nobleman named Antonio Caliari. He became known as Veronese after moving to Venice in 1553 (at the age of 25), but after about 1775 he resumed signing his paintings 'P. Caliari'. He died in Venice in 1588.
